Benny's Case

Context

As a first year project, a big narrative part was necessary in this investigation game. From talking to characters to creating a newspaper article, I had to explore different types of writing.

When :

May-June 2021

Duration :

3 weeks

Project size :

8 members (4 designers, 4 artists)

Pitch : When L.A. Noire unfold in a dinner in the 80s.

Synopsis : A reporter is sent to investigate on a Diner company who use some doubtful methods of productions.

Dialogue

One of the first features you encounter in the game is the discussion with two NPCs in a diner. The idea is to gather as much information as possible without pissing off the person in front of you to get quality answers. This is shown by the bar on the left side of the screen which fills up more or less depending on the answers and which determines the quality of the testimony that we collect in our notebook at the end of the interview.

Same thing, but for the cook, with fewer possibilities due to the production time and the ambition of the project.

After making all these dialogues, all that was left to do was to format them and integrate them into the engine.

Article

The last part of the game is the writing of the article that will bring down the unscrupulous director of the Diner. The clues and testimonies collected throughout the level are then transformed into paragraphs to be slid into the article which has holes in it.

The principle is that the articles have more or less impact, you have to find the ones that have the most impact, and a type that will determine their placement in the article. It is not visible, it is up to the player to read to understand where to place the paragraphs, because a logical sequence has been thought. And if the right type is put in the right place, it triggers a combo.
